The birth of gravitational wave astronomy
The Advanced LIGO (aLIGO) gravitational wave detectors operated the first scientific run from September 18, 2015 through January 12, 2016.
In this talk I will describe the first detection: GW150914, and discuss the results and methods of the electromagnetic follow -up campaign associated with it, including the participation of the TOROS collaboration utilizing the Estación Astrofísica de Bosque Alegre telescope.
I will discuss some of the astrophysical implications of this discovery as well as the promise for future detections.
