Gravitational waves: history, detection, and prospects

The collaboration running the Advanced LIGO detector has recently announced the first direct detection of gravitational waves of astrophysical origin. This a momentous scientific discovery. In this talk, I will review the history of the many attempts to discover such waves, and I will discuss some of the implications of this event for both science and philosophy.
